Beyond imagination: My personal encounters with IoT’s unstoppable evolution

Step into the world of IoT, where everyday objects become interconnected powerhouses of data and insights. Join me on a journey spanning over two decades, as I reflect on the evolution of this technology and its incredible impact on our lives. From its humble beginnings as a nascent concept to its status as a global phenomenon, IoT has truly transformed the way we interact with the world around us.

Cast your mind back to the late 1990s, a time when IoT was not yet a term on everyone’s lips. It was during this period that I found myself immersed in a ground-breaking project, one that involved connecting industrial equipment to a network. Our objective was clear: monitor the equipment’s performance in real-time and detect any issues before they escalated. The technology of the time relied on proprietary protocols and stored data in local databases. Little did we know then, this was just the start of something extraordinary.

Let me transport you to another customer solution I worked on, an ingenious endeavour that involved monitoring material transported on a conveyor belt. By placing sensors, like light and weight detectors, in segments along the belt, we could ensure the quantity of material matched at both the loading and unloading points. It was a challenging endeavour, but the potential for IoT-driven innovation was becoming increasingly evident.

As the early 2000s beckoned, we began exploring the possibilities of using the internet to connect devices. While IoT was still in its infancy, its potential to revolutionise our lives was impossible to ignore. Armed with a burning curiosity, we delved into various technologies, including RFID, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, seeking ways to connect devices and gather real-time data. The future was unfolding before our eyes.

By the mid-2000s, IoT had started to capture the imagination of many, signalling the arrival of a new technological era. The proliferation of smartphones and the widespread adoption of cloud computing fuelled the rapid development of IoT. Devices of all kinds were being interwoven into the fabric of the internet. We found ourselves working on ambitious projects, connecting cars, healthcare appliances, and even cameras to the vast network of networks. The world was changing, and IoT was at the forefront of this transformation.

Fast forward to the present day, and IoT has become an intrinsic part of our lives. It has permeated every aspect of our existence, manifesting as an invisible tapestry that weaves together smart devices and connectivity. From fitness trackers that monitor our health to smart homes that enhance our comfort and security, IoT has reshaped our reality. In the industrial sector, it empowers us with real-time data and analytics, propelling efficiency, and productivity to new heights.

Reflecting on my personal journey in the world of IoT, I am awestruck by the tremendous strides we have made. We transitioned from proprietary protocols and bespoke circuits to a global phenomenon that defines our modern landscape.
